Background:
When Madelyn first said that she wanted to do an Ariel themed party I got all excited and searched for cute invitations, table decorations, party outfits, etc. I found some cute stuff on Pinterest and was ready to go. The invitations (sorry no picture) were cute glittery scrapbook paper cut to make ocean waves in three different colors. The dress I found was super cute and matched our theme, see the party pictures in the last post. Then I found a cute table decoration idea with live goldfish in little bowls. I thought it might be a bit over the top but my lovely husband agreed to it. Well, one day over spring break I was out and about shopping, stopped in PetSmart and found a regular (SMALL) golfish bowl for less than $10 and some 20 cent golfish. PERFECT!! Just what I wanted in case the stupid fish die in week I'm only out about $12.
My Inspiration (found on pinterest) I didn't want to go this overboard but thought it was cute. In my mind we would set up on the kitchen table and a couple of the craft activities for the party would also go on the table so I wanted something small but cute.
Fastforward:
This is where the story gets good. I was running a little short on time and asked my lovely husband to purchase the fish. Let me make it clear, I gave specific directions with size of the bowl, cost of the fish, and my reasons why he shouldn't go overboard. Those of my readers who know my lovely husband know why I need to be so thorough and why I was worried he might go overboard!
On the day before the party my lovely husband was to purchase the fish. When I left work I called to see if he had and I was slightly nervous because after 16 years with a person you know them. And I knew he would go overboard but I was hoping not much! So here is how the phone conversation went...
Me: "Hi Babe, did you get the fish?"
Matt: "I'm the best dad ever!!"
Me: "What did you do?!!
Matt: "Well, I got a little carried away but you're gonna love it!"
And that was it, he wouldn't tell me anything more, and I was now getting really nervous! He told me I could wait and see when I get home. Yikes!
So I zoomed home about a thousand miles an hour. Raced upstairs, with Madelyn only to find my lovely husband had locked himself in Madelyn's room and refused to come out or let us in. Oh no, now I'm terrifed of what he did!! After a few minutes he finally let us in and this is what I found...
Honestly, I don'r remember much from there. My reaction wasn't pretty, there were words, there was silent treatment, and it was bad. As he pleaded his case of how the salesman clearly had him snowed about how he needed all this crap I was pissed. What about my cute table?? What the hell are we going to do with this enormous fish tank that now consumes Madelyn's room?? And the old standard, if you want something done right, you do it yourself.
So I moved to Plan B and scooped us some sand from the sandbox and went with it. This is what the table ended up looking like and it was fine.
We've moved past this now. I've always loved fish. My dad used to keep a fish book at home and I remember looking through it at all the colorful fish. So now we all cuddle up at bedtime, turn the light on in the fish tank, and watch the fish before Madelyn goes to bed. By the way, this girl loves the fish, and her over the top Daddy!
